We received a big shipment of new Sublime Stitching patterns, tools and awesome-ness.
My favorite: glow-in-the-dark floss. I've used it before -- and it works like magic.
In October 2013, we invited friends, family and complete strangers to celebrate with us at Ugly Baby and La Ru. Shrinky Dinks were made. Many a snack was eaten. Snarky Cards was in the house typing up all kinds of cards.
Dogs were petted. And petted some more. We hope you'll join us next year!
Last week we got to test out Epson's LabelWorks Ribbon Printer. One of the projects we came up with were Felt Fortune Cookies. It was so much fun (plus super quick and easy) that we wanted to share our DIY tutorial with you.
To gear up for summer we have extended our hours! We are now open every day of the week (Monday - Saturday 11am-6pm and Sundays 11am-5pm). To help us stay open 7 days a week we've hired Lauren’s (La Ru’s) brother Evan. He works the shop Sunday - Tuesday. We asked him a couple questions so you could get to know him:
What kind of art projects do you work on? Very random ones, whatever pops into my head. Usually monsters.
**Please share your favorite Etsy Crafty Party 2013 memory in the comments. Also, we like you.**
On June 20, 2013, Ugly Baby and La Ru hosted a birthday party for Etsy. There are parties around the country - and Internationally - on Etsy's birthday and we were excited to play host for the only party in Washington state. Heck yeah!
The theme of the party was "Community" so we rounded up all the crafty groups in Seattle to help co-produce the event. Then, we badgered all the shops who sell handmade items or craft supplies into donating awesome stuff for us to give away.
EtsyRAIN, Unanimous Craft and School House Craft were kind enough to offer their woman-power, awesome brains and shell out a few bucks to make the event extra amazing. The amazing Michaela took photos all day and Tweeted her brains out for us. A group of extra-special volunteers trooped down in the rain to make sure everything went as planned. We can't say THANK YOU enough to everyone who helped.
Okay, okay. We know - they're rats - not bunnies. That's okay. Any fuzzy, furry thing that we end up helping through Bunny Party! counts.
Meet Zena and her two foster rats. Zena came to Bunny Party! and learned that you can foster all kinds of animals - including rats. We forced her to answer a few of the inevitable questions that come up when someone near and dear to you decides to foster rats:
On March 30, 2013, we hosted BUNNY PARTY! 2013 along with our neighbors on Western Ave: The Paper Feather, Masquerade Wines and Dwyer Gallery. The Seattle Animal Shelter brought over four bunnies and Lauren (co-owner of Ugly Baby and La Ru) brought over her two bun buns. Six bunnies total were available for petting in the upstairs of our shop. We asked potential petters to give a donation to the Seattle Animal Shelter -- and wowza - people were certainly generous. All told, we raised over $450 to help homeless bun buns who find their way to the shelter after the Easter holiday. We got a note from the Seattle Animal Shelter that explains just how timely our gift was:
We would like to thank everyone who donated to the Seattle Animal Shelter Saturday at the fantastic and fun Bunny Party! We also want to let you know that your donations will go to help rabbits immediately.
The amazing Moxie Lieberman from Hi Fiber dropped off some of her cute needle felting DIY craft kits the other day. You can make yourself an Octopus Friend, a Bunny Head Magnet, a terrified-looking Carrot Magnet or a Little Buddy bee-looking guy.
Needle felting is a really fun and pretty simple DIY craft. If you're looking for a place to start getting creative -- this is it. The kits come with everything you need: needle, a bit of Eco-Foam (so you don't stab yourself and stuff) and wool fiber.
You don't have to love Valentine's Day. You can hate it. It's okay. Whether tongue in cheek - or dead serious, there's no need to be all lovey-dovey.
At Ugly Baby and La Ru, we have the perfect gifts for Valentine's haters. And for under $15. A print of some cute animals fighting? Art to hang in your shower that tells the world your thoughts on marriage? Yes. Yes. Yes. Oh, yes.
That one made-up holiday for people in love is coming up soon. Valentine's Day. That's the one.
You either shower each other with gifts and go out for an overpriced and crowded dinner with everyone else in the city who loves someone. Or maybe you detest the whole thing - relationship or not - and stay home to boycott the whole deal. Either way, we're on your side. Yes, we at Ugly Baby and La Ru are stradding the fence on this divisive issue.
To Valentines or not to Valentines. I guess that is the question.
