Summer Hours and New Employee!

To gear up for summer we have extended our hours! We are now open every day of the week (Monday - Saturday 11am-6pm and Sundays 11am-5pm). To help us stay open 7 days a week we've hired Lauren’s (La Ru’s) brother Evan. He works the shop Sunday - Tuesday. We asked him a couple questions so you could get to know him:

What kind of art projects do you work on? Very random ones, whatever pops into my head. Usually monsters.

Feeling a little Anti-Valentines Day?

You don't have to love Valentine's Day. You can hate it. It's okay. Whether tongue in cheek - or dead serious, there's no need to be all lovey-dovey.

At Ugly Baby and La Ru, we have the perfect gifts for Valentine's haters. And for under $15. A print of some cute animals fighting? Art to hang in your shower that tells the world your thoughts on marriage? Yes. Yes. Yes. Oh, yes.

Valentines Day: Love it or Hate it... It Still Happens

That one made-up holiday for people in love is coming up soon. Valentine's Day. That's the one.

You either shower each other with gifts and go out for an overpriced and crowded dinner with everyone else in the city who loves someone. Or maybe you detest the whole thing - relationship or not - and stay home to boycott the whole deal. Either way, we're on your side. Yes, we at Ugly Baby and La Ru are stradding the fence on this divisive issue.

To Valentines or not to Valentines. I guess that is the question.

Guess Who Was Featured in a Video About Pike Place Market????

It might be us. (hang in there until minute 1:28 to be sure)

Okay, okay. I'll ruin the surprise. IT IS US! A big thanks to the Market for including our new, little shop in their latest promotional video.

It was fun to make. We spent many hours outside in front of the shop waiting for the street to be quiet enough to film. Semi trucks, commuter traffic, puppies, loading and unloading -- we finally finished up indoors.

It's horrifying to hear your own voice played back to you.... but we'll try to get over it. EEEEeeeek!

Make and Takes Feature

The kind and decidedly beautiful Marie from Make and Takes paid our shop a little visit and wrote a blog post about it. We like her. Forever.

If you're looking for craft tutorials for kids or for home improvement projects, Make and Takes is the place. My favorites:

People are Really CURIOUS about What the Heck we are.

Anytime people walk by and see us in the store they try to come in. We had to hang up a sign so they aren't confused when they walk into a half set up shop.

It's a pretty good problem to have.

Four Days In.... We Have the Makings of a Store.

This thing is shaping up nicely. We have a painted staircase. We have a new, beautiful ceiling color. The upstairs has three coats of bright yellow on one wall and one coat of gray on the other three. Shelves for prints have been installed in the retail space and Lauren Magic Erasered all the tiles. She also painted some cute characters for the front window so people can continue to wonder what the heck we're doing in here.

We got the keys! We got the keys! We got the keys!

Never mind the weird oil stains behind me. Never mind the dirty, dirty, dirty dirtiness. Never mind that there is one place on the stairway that you could fall through and seriously hurt yourself. Never mind that I spent all day there yesterday and only successfully cleaned a 25 square foot area. Never mind that the sink upstairs drains into a pvc pipe that goes through a hole someone drilled in the floor, and travels down to the first floor to drain into an open hole under the stairs.

The Painting Begins

We began painting the exterior of the shop this week. We spent a long time scraping and scraping and scraping and scraping. Then some kind soul walked by and told us about some kind of finish that peels the paint right off. We couldn't get to Home Depot fast enough. We got the finish, stripped the white paint and recaulked the windows (Lauren pronounces the "L").
